Onion Bhaji Recipe

Crispy on the outside, soft in the middle — these homemade Onion Bhajis bring authentic Kerala-inspired flavour straight to your kitchen. Using our Indian Curry Pot Onion Bhaji Spice Mix, this recipe creates beautifully golden bhajis perfect as a starter, snack or side dish.
“Ulli Vada” means Onion Fritter

It’s Kerala’s version of an onion bhaji — crisp, golden and very popular as a tea-time snack.
Shopping List
- Onions – 400 g, finely diced
- Onion Bhaji Spice Mix – 1 full pack
- Sunflower or vegetable oil – for frying
- Salt – to taste
- Water – as needed
Cooking Method

Prepare the onions
Finely chop the onions and sprinkle with salt.
Knead gently for a couple of minutes, then cover and leave for 10 minutes to soften and release moisture. -
Add the spice mix
Add the entire pack of Onion Bhaji Spice Mix to the onions.
Mix well to coat evenly.
If the mixture feels too dry, lightly sprinkle water until the bhaji mix binds together.
Leave aside for 5–10 minutes. -
Heat the oil
Heat at least 1 inch of oil in a pan to 145°C or medium heat. -
Shape the bhajis
Lightly oil your palm.
Scoop a tablespoon of the mixture, shape into a medium-thick round patty and gently lower into the oil. -
Fry in batches
Fry on both sides until golden brown and crispy.
Each batch will take 5–7 minutes.
Remove and drain on kitchen paper. -
Serve
Enjoy hot with mint yoghurt dip or as part of an Indian curry meal.
Recipe Notes
- For even crispier bhajis, slice onions extra thin
- Add chopped coriander or green chillies for extra flavour
